Appropriate Policies will Create Job Opportunities in IT Sector


Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui on Thursday revealed that numbers of policy measures have been taken and few are in pipeline to create jobs in the IT sector.

The IT Minister while replying to a question in the National Assembly on Thursday said that Prime Minister has constituted a Taskforce on IT & Telecom, consisting of IT & Telecom subject experts along with representatives of stakeholder Public organizations.

Subject Taskforce is currently working on a detailed review of IT & Telecom sectors and recommendations to boost the ICT sector will be submitted to Federal Cabinet for its promotion and growth, accordingly. Job creation in the ICT sector is a key agenda for the subject deliberations.

The Minister said that Digital Pakistan Policy 2018 is a well-crafted policy document which covers almost every stream of IT Sector in holistic terms. This policy document is also aligned with Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and talks about cross-sectoral National ICT agenda.

Digiskills program which was conceived by the Ministry of IT has been launched across the country, to train one (1) million people in the future of work using technology. The Virtual University of Pakistan has been selected to execute this mega training program under the auspices of Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom through Ignite National Technology Fund (formerly National ICT R&D Fund).

The DigiSkills Program is aimed at equipping our youth, freelancers, students, housewives, professionals, etc. with knowledge, skills, tools & techniques necessary to seize the opportunities available internationally on online marketplaces as well as locally to earn a decent living.

The Minister further stated that ICT FOR GIRLS is a signature project of MoIT to spur the socio-economic uplift of this very important segment of the society. The primary purpose of the project is to provide with digital skills training through Information Communication Technology (ICT) Infrastructure with the latest hardware, high-speed Internet, software and trained human resource, to the prescribed centers. Through this Mega project, Ministry of IT & Telecom through Universal Service Fund aims to increase the employability potential of the girls in Pakistan, so that they are financially empowered to take care of their families and themselves.

Under this project, 226 Schools of Islamabad have been provided with Digital Labs. In addition to the equipment, 202 teachers have also been placed at these institutions. These teachers have been trained by Microsoft under the Trainer program on 21st Century 4C Skills. This project will help in making over 110,000 girl students “Computer Literate” studying in Islamabad’s schools and bringing them on par with students elsewhere in the world.

As part of this project, 150 Women Empowerment Centers of Baitul-Mal have been provided with Digital Labs. Women empowerment Centers is an initiative of Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal devoted to the capacity building of women in un-served and underserved areas of Pakistan. Through this program over 5,000 girls will be trained annually at state of the art computer labs under the coaching and training program of Microsoft. Over 10,000 girls have benefited from this program so far.

Siddiqui further said that MoIT, through Universal Service Fund, is also working to connect the un-served and underserved areas of the country which will provide access to backward areas of the country thereby increasing their productivity and employability.
