The Pakistani culinary industry mourns the loss of several celebrated chefs who graced our television screens and inspired countless home cooks with their unique talents and heartwarming personalities.
The vibrant culinary landscape of Pakistan has long been enriched by a constellation of talented individuals, much like its thriving drama and entertainment sectors. This journey began with pioneers such as the legendary Kokab Khawaja, who introduced cooking expertise to television audiences on PTV. Over time, this trend blossomed, leading to the launch of dedicated 24-hour cooking channels like Masala TV, Zaiqa, and ARY Zauq, platforms that brought an array of iconic culinary figures into Pakistani homes.

These esteemed chefs captivated the public with their unique recipes, innovative techniques, and warm personalities, amassing huge fan followings across the nation and beyond. From traditional Desi dishes to international cuisines, they showcased their expertise, making cooking accessible and enjoyable for millions. Their contributions not only elevated the culinary arts but also established a new genre of television entertainment, inspiring generations of aspiring cooks and food enthusiasts.

Among these celebrated personalities, several have sadly departed, leaving a profound void in the industry and the hearts of their admirers. The beloved Zubaida Tariq, affectionately known as Zubaida Aapa, a renowned cooking expert and herbalist, passed away on January 4, 2018, at the age of 72 due to heart failure. Her gentle demeanor and invaluable household tips made her a household name. Similarly, Chef Tahir Chaudhry, an internationally certified chef who honed his skills in Dubai, France, and Italy, shocked fans with his sudden demise from cardiac arrest on October 6, 2018. His budget-friendly recipes were a particular favorite.

The industry also mourned the loss of Chef Farah Jahanzeb, a young and promising talent who succumbed to breast cancer, leaving behind her daughters and husband. Chef Sara Riaz, a respected food expert with over 20 years of experience, also battled breast cancer before her passing on April 18, 2014, remembered for training an entire generation of chefs. Pakistani-American chef Fatima Ali, or Fati, a fan favorite on Top Chef (Season 15), bravely fought Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare bone and soft tissue cancer, before her death at just 29 in January 2019.


More recently, Naheed Ansari, a famous chef with 35 years of culinary experience, passed away in July 2024 after a long battle with cancer, celebrated for her teaching and gentle nature. Chef Zakir Qureshi, known for his live cooking shows on Masala TV and expertise in both Pakistani and international cuisine, passed away at 58 in April 2025 following a prolonged struggle with kidney disease. The culinary community also bid farewell to Chef Rahat Ali, a popular figure from Geo TV, whose family recently confirmed her passing, requesting privacy during their time of grief.



These culinary maestros left an indelible mark on Pakistan’s food culture, their recipes and legacies continuing to inspire. Their absence is deeply felt, yet their contributions live on through the countless dishes they taught us to prepare and the memories they created.
