Pakistani writer Saima Akram Chaudhry reveals creative constraints behind her recent drama setbacks. This has sparked a crucial conversation about artistic freedom in television.
Recently, acclaimed Pakistani drama writer Saima Akram Chaudhry stirred conversations across social media by candidly addressing the reasons behind the lukewarm reception of some of her recent projects, including Chaudhary and Sons, Neeli Kothi, and Chaand Tara. Her revealing Facebook post offered fans an unprecedented glimpse into the challenges faced by writers in the vibrant, yet often demanding, world of television production.

Known for her exceptional storytelling prowess, Saima Akram Chaudhry has carved a niche for herself as a prolific novelist, drama writer, and screenwriter. Her captivating narratives have graced monthly Urdu digests, but it’s her string of hit Ramzan dramas like Suno Chanda, Hum Tum, and Ishq Jalebi that truly cemented her status as a household name. Her upcoming series, Dekh Zara Pyar Se, starring the beloved Yumna Zaidi, is highly anticipated. In contrast, her currently airing drama, Neeli Kothi on Hum TV, has unfortunately struggled with viewership.

In her heartfelt post, Chaudhry articulated a clear distinction between her most celebrated works and those that fell short. She emphasized, “Apart from Fairy Tale, the dramas that I wrote from heart not only grabbed a huge success but also reached people’s hearts.” She attributed her greatest triumphs – including Suno Chanda, Hum Tum, Chupke Chupke, and Ishq Jalebi – to creative freedom. “When producers used to tell me to write freely and write from the heart… when the producers and directors didn’t restrict my pen, didn’t create issues over production costs, and no casting head confined my wishes within boundaries. I had delivered great work.”
Conversely, she lamented how “when a writer’s pen becomes restricted due to producers and production cost concerns, when everything that comes out of a pen is subjected to collective opinions, and when a director or actor tries to run a script according to their personal likes or dislikes, then only a serial is made that sometimes works but often fails.” This stark revelation paints a vivid picture of the creative compromises often made in the industry.

As fans continue to laud her earlier Ramzan dramas, expressing sentiments like “Suno Chanda was too good” and “Ishq Jalebi was awesome,” many are now pondering the implications of her statement for future projects. With the highly anticipated Dekh Zara Pyar Se on the horizon, audiences and industry insiders alike will be closely watching. They want to see if Saima Akram Chaudhry‘s pen can once again soar freely. They are hoping it will deliver the heartfelt narratives that have captivated millions. What are your hopes for her upcoming drama?
