How Aliza Arshad Followed Her Father’s Footsteps in Journalism

Arshad Sharif was one of those journalists. He was a renowned Pakistani journalist, writer, and television news anchor who specialized in investigative journalism and covered many political events in the country for national and international news organizations. He was also a vocal supporter of ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan and had complained of harassment before he left Pakistan in August 2022.

On 23 October 2022, he was shot and killed by police in Kenya in a case of mistaken identity. His death caused outrage and grief in his home country, where thousands of people attended his funeral in Islamabad. He was posthumously awarded the Pride of Performance by the President of Pakistan Arif Alvi for his contributions to journalism.

Aliza Arshad – Carrying Legacy

But his legacy lives on through his daughter, Aliza Arshad, who has decided to follow in his footsteps and pursue a career in journalism. Aliza, who is in her early twenties, has joined a local news channel as a reporter. She says she was inspired by her father’s passion for journalism and his commitment to exposing corruption and injustice.

“I always admired my father for his bravery and professionalism. He taught me to be honest, curious, and fearless. He also encouraged me to pursue my dreams and interests. Journalism was one of them,” she says.

Aliza says she wants to continue her father’s work and make him proud. She says she is interested in covering social issues, human rights, and women empowerment. She also hopes to learn from other experienced journalists and improve her skills.

“I know journalism is not an easy field, especially for women. There are many challenges and risks involved. But I am ready to face them with confidence and determination. I want to be a voice for the voiceless and a source of inspiration for other young women who want to join this profession,” she says.

Aliza’s decision to enter journalism has been welcomed by her late father’s admirers and colleagues, who have praised her courage and talent. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shahbaz Gul shared Aliza’s TV report on his Twitter account and wished her well for her future. Social media users also expressed their support and appreciation for Aliza’s entry into journalism.

Aliza says she is grateful for the positive feedback and encouragement she has received from the public. She says she feels honored to be the daughter of Arshad Sharif and hopes to carry on his legacy with dignity and integrity.

“I miss my father every day. He was not only my father but also my mentor and friend. He always motivated me to do my best and never give up. I want to follow his example and make a difference in this world through journalism,” she says.
