Sania Saeed’s ‘Aap Ki Izzat’ Role Sparks Debate Among Industry Veterans

Veteran actresses Atiqa Odho and Marina Khan share their critical views on Sania Saeed’s casting as a grandmother in the hit drama ‘Aap Ki Izzat’.

The recently aired Hum TV drama, Aap Ki Izzat, has quickly captivated audiences and critics alike, amassing an impressive 10 million views across its initial three episodes and achieving remarkable TRP ratings. Written by Umera Ahmed and produced by Nina Kashif and Momina Duraid, under the direction of Saifee Hassan, the series features a stellar cast including Ahsan Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Urwa Hocane, Sania Saeed, and Nauman Masood.

While the drama has received glowing reviews for its emotionally touching storyline and strong performances, a particular casting choice has sparked a discussion among veteran actresses. Judges of Kya Drama Hai, including Nadia Khan, Marina Khan, and Atiqa Odho, expressed their admiration for the show. However, both Atiqa Odho and Marina Khan voiced reservations regarding Sania Saeed’s portrayal of a grandmother in the series.

Atiqa Odho shared her skepticism about Sania Saeed taking on such an elderly role, drawing a parallel to her own career. “I find it difficult to accept if it’s given to me. Sania and I started our careers together in Sitara Aur Mehrunnisa, so when I see her playing such an elderly character, I think, ‘Oh my God, why is she playing this old role? She has become a grandmother at such a young age.’ Sania has played the role beautifully, though. But I feel like we girls are becoming old now,” Odho remarked. This sentiment was echoed by Marina Khan, who pointed out the age disparity with other cast members. “Nauman Masood and Sania are of the same age. I couldn’t digest Sania in such an old-age character, especially when actors of her own age are playing younger roles. Nauman Masood, in particular, was shown as younger than her. There is no doubt that she is a tremendous actor and is playing the role perfectly, but they should have cast much younger actors opposite her.”

The discussion highlights an interesting industry perspective on casting choices for senior roles. While Sania Saeed’s acting prowess is universally acknowledged, the debate raises questions about age-appropriate casting in Pakistani dramas. What are your thoughts on actors taking on roles that significantly age them on screen?
