Pakistani social media users call out Bollywood’s obsession as Sara Ali Khan and Ayushmann Khurrana’s film Udta Teer faces intense online backlash.
Bollywood is under fire once again after announcing its upcoming feature film Udta Teer, starring Sara Ali Khan and Ayushmann Khurrana, scheduled for theatrical release on 23rd October. Centered around an anti-Pakistan narrative, the project has reignited widespread criticism across digital platforms. Audiences across Pakistan quickly called out Indian cinema for relying on hostility toward their country to drive box office sales.

Both Sara Ali Khan and Ayushmann Khurrana have built notable film careers in mainstream Indian cinema over the past decade through romantic comedies, social dramas, and commercial hits. However, joining high-profile anti-Pakistan projects has become an increasingly frequent career move for leading actors in Mumbai. Pakistani cinephiles noted that Indian filmmakers frequently pivot to nationalist storylines whenever theatrical turnouts drop, turning neighboring conflict into guaranteed commercial fodder.

Jointly produced by Karan Johar, Guneet Monga Kapoor, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, and Achin Jain under Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment, Udta Teer has triggered sharp responses online. Pakistani netizens flooded social media with witty commentary and scathing critiques regarding the obsession. One fan sarcastically noted that Pakistani content creators should sue Indian studios for royalties, while another quipped that Indian cinema would be completely jobless without Pakistan to use as a narrative trope.

As the debate surrounding Udta Teer continues to gain momentum ahead of its October premiere, questions remain over whether Indian cinema will ever move past recycled political tropes. Will audiences eventually grow tired of formulaic nationalist narratives, or will studios continue exploiting regional tensions for theatrical success?
