Pakistani star Dananeer Mobeen ignited a fresh debate, boldly labeling the iconic Bollywood film Devdas ‘overrated’ in a candid interview, challenging its classic status.
Pakistani sensation Dananeer Mobeen recently made headlines during an appearance on Mashion Pakistan’s short chit-chat session, where she boldly shared her unfiltered opinion on one of Bollywood’s most revered classics. With characteristic candour, Mobeen declared the iconic film Devdas as ‘overrated’, sending ripples through social media and sparking a lively debate among film enthusiasts.

The multi-talented Dananeer Mobeen has carved a significant niche for herself in the Pakistani entertainment industry. Beyond her viral ‘Pawri Ho Rahi Hai’ moment, she has showcased her acting prowess in acclaimed dramas such as Sinf-e-Aahan, Mohabbat Gumshuda Meri, Meem Se Mohabbat, and Very Filmy. Currently, she is generating buzz for her upcoming sports drama Mera Lyari, written and directed by Abu Aleeha. Her engaging presence extends to social media, where she commands a massive following of around 7.1 million on Instagram.

When pressed on which classic movie she considered overrated, Mobeen didn’t hesitate to name Devdas. She passionately questioned its revered status, stating, ‘What is the story? Guys, can somebody break it down? Does it make any sense?’ She dissected the plot, highlighting what she perceived as problematic character arcs: ‘The guy is an alcoholic, there is a woman who has no self-respect, there is a shameless dad, there is another woman who is forced upon another man, there is another man who is forced upon a woman. What is happening? Why is it a classic? Why is everyone going gaga over it?’ While acknowledging the film’s visual splendor—’Yes, I get the grandeur, the jewelry, the dresses, the vibe, and the grand sets’—she firmly concluded, ‘but sorry, there is no story in it. Yes, Devdas is the movie I never liked, I don’t know why I am so hating it.’
Dananeer Mobeen’s candid critique has certainly opened a Pandora’s Box, inviting viewers to re-evaluate the narratives often celebrated as cinematic masterpieces. Her bold stance reinforces her reputation as an artist unafraid to speak her mind, prompting a vital conversation: does cinematic grandeur always equate to a compelling story, or is it time to look beyond the lavish sets and re-examine the core narratives of our beloved classics? Fans are eagerly awaiting her next move, both on and off screen.
