The veteran actress slammed flashy bus projects at a Karachi press talk, demanding jobs and economic inclusion instead of cosmetic urban development.
At a recent press talk in Karachi, Sania Saeed turned the spotlight away from glamour and onto the city’s deepening livelihood crisis. The acclaimed actress, known for decades of commanding screen presence, used the platform to challenge authorities on prioritising transport projects over jobs for millions.

Sania Saeed began her career in the late 1980s with theatre before moving to television, where she built a reputation through landmark dramas including Aahat, Sitara Aur Mehrunissa, Zaibunnissa, Sang-e-Mar Mar, Shanakht, Sang-e-Mah, and Ae Dil. She was married to director Shahid Shafaat, though the couple have reportedly parted ways. Beyond acting, she has consistently spoken out on social and political issues affecting Pakistan.

Addressing journalists, Sia Saeed zeroed in on Karachi’s much-publicised bus rapid transit lines. “Where will I go after sitting in the Green bus if I have no job? Have you ever thought about how such a huge population will live here in this city which wasn’t even built for this much big population? How will you provide jobs to the people? How will you accommodate them in the economy? How will the youth contribute? Where will I go through Green buses? I don’t go to school or have a job. Nothing will happen through these bus services. Bus services don’t make cities great; people need employment in order to contribute to the economy and earn. Nothing will happen from the Green Line, Orange Line, or Red Line buses,” she said.

Her remarks tap into a growing frustration among Karachi residents, where infrastructure ribbon-cuttings often overshadow the daily struggle for work and wages. With youth unemployment rising and the city’s population swelling past 16 million, Saeed’s blunt question lingers: can a city truly move forward on bus lanes alone, or does it need an economy that actually carries its people somewhere?
